This past summer we convened our third annual retreat bringing together leaders from our member organizations,
invited guests and leading experts to probe the future of American education and our role in shaping it.  Similar to
our previous two gatherings in Aspen and Santa Cruz, we were able to  create an intimate, highly interactive
environment for sharing and building big ideas for leading change in education.

At this retreat, we probed the interrelationships among knowledge, innovation and transformation in shaping the
future of education. Our explorations revolved around four interrelated questions:

  • How will new technologies affect cognition and the future of learning? (Day 1)
  • What are the key components and conditions of innovation that can  transform entire enterprises? (Day 2
    morning)
  • How can the research and development/knowledge infrastructure be reinvented to foster innovation and
change in education  and more effectively respond to new learning needs in the 21st Century?  (Day 2
    afternoon and Day 3)
  • What should Knowledge Alliance do to develop and promote a new vision for education R&D over the next
    18 months?(Day 3)

Our agenda included three three-hour segments for our members and guest participants to engage with expert
“provocateurs”.  Each of the provocateurs made an initial presentation followed by open facilitated discussions.
Ample time was included in the agenda for reflection and review. On the final morning we convened a special
working session for Knowledge Alliance members for planning and follow up strategies.

As with our previous retreats we saw this gathering as another opportunity to think big about the future and move
aggressively forward together with new ideas and initiatives.
